  8.                              THE BICYCLE BUSINESS

  10.               Do you like bicycles? Have we got news for  you!   There
  11.          are several ways to make big bucks with bicycles.
  12.  
  13.               Having  just  read  the  previous section about the yard
  14.          sale game, you must see one  way  immediately.  You  can  buy
  15.          used  bikes at yard sales, and sell them for three times more
  16.          money.

  18.               You can consign bikes to second-hand stores and  bicycle
  19.          shops.   They  are  almost  all  interested  in consignments,
  20.          don't be afraid to ask. you can sell bikes at  flea  markets,
  21.          and,  depending  on where you live, you can chain bikes up in
  22.          front of your house with a sign that says "BIKES  FOR  SALE".
  23.          Or  you can chain up bikes in front of a friend's house. Your
  24.          friend can sell the bikes, and split the profit with you.

  26.               The best sellers are children's  bikes.  Mountain  bikes
  27.          are  easy  to  sell,  but  used  ones  are  hard to find at a
  28.          reasonable  price.   We  mostly  ignore  mountain bikes, only
  29.          buying them when something good shows up, yet we have  plenty
  30.          of customers for our childrens' bikes.

  32.               There  are  two  things  that you must be careful about,
  33.          however.   The  bikes  must  not  be  stolen.   Consider  the
  34.          source.  Do  the people you are buying from seem decent? Most
  35.          families having yard sales would never sell stolen bikes  out
  36.          of  their  own  home.  In  most communities, you can call the
  37.          police and ask them to check their computer  for  the  serial
  38.          number of a bike you are considering.

  40.               The  other  thing you must do is make sure the bikes you
  41.          sell are mechanically safe.

  43.               It is possible  to  make  money  in  the  bike  business
  44.          without doing any repairs, but there is far greater profit in
  45.          buying  broken bikes which sell for nearly nothing and fixing
  46.          them.

  48.               Bike repair is easy to learn  and  a  really  satisfying
  49.          craft,  but  for  those  of  you  who  are  not interested in
  50.          turning wrenches, we suggest partnership.  One person can  do
  51.          all  the  repairing,  while  the  other  does  the buying and
  52.          selling.  Partnerships are also a way  to  instantly  acquire
  53.          equipment.  Perhaps one partner has a big barn, but the other
  54.          has   tools.   A  good  partnership  can  be  sister-brother,
  55.          father-son or grandchild-grandparent. This is a great project
  56.          to bring a family with scattered interests together.

  58.          * If you have repairing facilities,  you  can  make  $30/hour
  59.          repairing  peoples'  bikes for them.  No licensing or college
  60.          degree is required, yet there is a big demand  for  qualified
  61.          bike  repair  people. How do you become qualified? Start with
  62.          repairing just the bikes you sell  (test  ride  your  repairs
  63.          extensively  to  make  sure  they are safe). Then do just the
  64.          retail  repair  work  of  which  you  are  capable.  At   the
  65.          beginning, you can fix flats tires for people, but you should
  66.          probably  not  attempt  complete  tune-ups.  Eventually  with
  67.          practice, complete overhauls will be no problem for you.

  69.               There are several bike repair books on the  market,  and
  70.          for  the  right  price,  the local bike shop would be glad to
  71.          help you when you have a problem.

  73.          * There is also a great profit to be had  in  supplying  used
  74.          parts.  If you accumulate a big parts pile, it is like having
  75.          money in the bank. (At Another Company, we used to  have  1/4
  76.          acre coverd with bike parts, in places 6 feet deep.)
